Welcome back to the new term
The shortest term of the school year has commenced. For the first time in five years our campus does not have a build in progress following the completion of the Upper Primary Centre over the holidays. I am delighted by this build which offers an outstanding facility for our Primary School. It is a wonderful, purpose designed environment for our senior Primary students who will have the opportunity to learn in a more mature setting – an ideal preparation for Year 7 Transition. The co-located Primary Japanese room and Music studio will be accessed by all Primary students.
On Tuesday the Year 6 students and staff were thrilled to begin the term in their new classrooms and later host their parents to afternoon tea and a tour of the Centre. Every person I spoke to commented positively on the spacious, light filled environment and attractive, functional indoor and outdoor spaces. Our architect, Steve Mueller, EMCO builders and Project Manager Gailene Shore are to be commended on a job well done.
This week we have welcomed back Head of English Irene Terpon and Primary PE Specialist Mel Fowler from Long Service Leave. Congratulations to Teacher of the Deaf Melissa Lewis (nee McCagh) who was married during the holidays.
I am delighted to announce that Primary teacher Glyn Teape has been appointed to the position of Deputy Head of Primary at Frederick Irwin Anglican School Meadow Springs campus in Mandurah. Glyn, who is an Old Wollastonian, was my first staff appointment in 2001 as a graduate teacher. He has made a wonderful contribution to John Wollaston and is ready for this next step in his career.
New Anglican Archbishop of Perth
The recent announcement that The Right Reverend Kay Goldsworthy will be the new Anglican Archbishop of Perth has been well received by the Diocese. Bishop Kay who is currently the Bishop of Gippsland, is a familiar face in WA having worked as a school chaplain, parish priest and Assistant Bishop of Perth for many years. She is a great supporter of Anglican schools and the important role they play in the life of the Church. Bishop Kay will take up her new role early in 2018. I look forward to her visiting the School on a future occasion.
Next week the whole school acknowledges the contribution of the Year 12s and bids them farewell. Over several years, the tradition of Valedictory Week has grown to encompass a wonderful series of events which bring our Leavers’ school days to a close. Understandably, it is a time of mixed emotions for all involved. I look forward to leading the School’s celebrations for our Leavers as another fine group of young people prepare to leave our care.
With good wishes for the term ahead Anne Ford
